It is World Autism Day on April 2!

The international World Autism Day is held annually on April 2nd. It was first observed in 2008. We also want to raise awareness of this developmental disorder this year.

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), refers to a wide range of symptoms characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, limited language, and nonverbal communication.

Exact figures on the prevalence of autism in children in Germany are not available. Currently, a worldwide prevalence of about 1% is assumed. In the USA, an estimated one in 54 children is affected by autism. Autism occurs four times more often in boys than in girls.

We know that there is not just one autism, but many subtypes, most of which are influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Since autism is a spectrum disorder, every person with autism has different strengths and challenges. The way people with autism learn, think, and solve problems can range from highly skilled to severely impaired. Some people can only manage their daily lives with significant support, while others need less support and in some cases can live completely independently.

Several factors can influence the development of autism, and it is often accompanied by sensory sensitivities and medical issues such as gastrointestinal disorders, seizures, or sleep disturbances, as well as psychological challenges like anxiety, depression, and attention problems.

Signs of autism usually appear at the age of 2 or 3 years. Some related developmental delays can even appear earlier, and often the diagnosis can already be made at 18 months of age.

Research shows that early intervention leads to positive outcomes in the later life of people with autism.

How can therapy blankets help with autism?

Children with autism very often have developmental delays, which among other things are accompanied by a deteriorated perception of their own body.

Our therapy blankets are significantly heavier than normal blankets due to their weight. Their weight affects the muscles and joints, so the body can be better perceived. This perception in turn has a positive effect on the entire body circulation, breathing, and concentration.

Built-up overwhelm, stress, and associated aggression can be reduced, the own body is better sensed and relaxes.

The blanket is perceived like a loving hug, triggered by the happiness hormone serotonin and the sleep hormone melatonin, whose release is promoted when the weighted blanket is applied. The muscles and nervous system relax, anxieties are reduced, and the body can recover faster by lowering the stress hormone cortisol.

In addition, the weight of the blanket has positive effects on sleep. Falling asleep becomes easier, and sleep is deeper and more restful. Children are more focused during the day and can experience everyday life with less stress and more concentration.

Since the manifestations of autism in children can vary in intensity, a different therapy blanket is suitable for each child.

We offer three different models:

All therapy blankets for children have different constructions but the same effect. The overview of the differences between the blankets can help you find the right blanket for yourself or your child.
