Why you should start meditating

Finally being able to switch off properly and concentrate again – you can learn this with meditation. Do you suffer from constant brooding and inner restlessness? Through meditation, you find a way to interrupt the thought carousel and become more relaxed and balanced.

What does meditation mean?

Meditation stands for Reflection, contemplation and often has religious origins, such as from Buddhism. However, meditation does not have to have a religious framework, but can be freely practiced by anyone. In meditation, the goal is to free the mind and break the cycle by constantly observing ourselves and letting thoughts continuously circle. Meditation can promote mindfulness and self-acceptance while the attention rests on the breath, a word, or a sensation. Other thoughts come and go without pressure and without stiffening.

How does meditating work?

Meditating is not a school task where you sit down and find a solution. It's about training mindfulness and awareness. It doesn't work overnight but gradually. At first, it can be very difficult for you, and you might even think you are failing at meditating. But that's not the point. It is completely normal for other thoughts to fly into your head repeatedly and demand attention. You can gently try to push them aside. Always return to your focus.

To start meditating, it is better to practice a few minutes daily rather than once a week for a longer period. Meditating requires a lot of practice. Over time, you will notice how you can concentrate better and focus your attention on one thing. The surrounding thoughts will decrease. And you will feel that this has a great impact on your daily life and well-being.

What effects does meditating have?

Meditating is more than just sitting quietly. Studies show that meditation as a relaxation technique lowers blood pressure and pulse. Breathing slows down and metabolism calms. Regular meditation helps to better manage stress because those who can relax and concentrate better are less likely to be disturbed in stressful everyday situations.

The perfect environment for meditating

Meditating can be very demanding, especially at the beginning. You don't have to sit still right away and try to meditate "correctly." First, create the perfect setting. Celebrate your intention. Make yourself comfortable, dim the lights, maybe light a candle, and make yourself some tea. Make sure you won't be interrupted by phone rings or other devices. Wrap yourself in a blanket so you don't get cold. A yoga weighted blanket can additionally promote your relaxation, as the weight creates a pleasant pressure on muscles and the nervous system – you feel safe and secure.
