How do I find the right weight for my therapy blanket?

Never heard of a weighted blanket until recently? Are there already pre-existing conditions or does the thought of too much blanket weight on the body cause discomfort?
Then the decision on the blanket weight can indeed be difficult. The indicated 10% of body weight already provides a good orientation. Some tips show what else matters besides body weight. The more targeted the decision, the sooner deep sleep can come!

1. What does my body tolerate well?
Every body is different, and that's a good thing. If you are aware of how sensitive or robust your own body is, the decision on the weighted blanket becomes easier. Some bodies react more sensitively to the pressure exerted by the therapy blanket, while others can hardly get enough weight. One guideline (which may not apply to everyone) is the high proportion of muscle in a person. These tolerate more weight, whereas people with less muscle perceive the weight more intensely. Therefore, it is recommended to choose more weight than indicated in the weight chart if you engage in heavy physical activity or have lower physical sensitivity.

2. Are there any physical complaints?
Physical complaints, such as back or knee pain, should also be considered when choosing a therapy blanket. The pressure exerted by the therapy blanket can worsen the complaints. Here, a weight class below the recommended one should be chosen. An alternative is not to cover the affected body part completely with the therapy blanket. For back pain, it helps to place the blanket only on the lower part of the body.

3. Do I have any illnesses?
Sleep problems are often closely related to illnesses, where pain or high doses of medication rob you of rest at night. A blanket unfortunately cannot cure diseases, but it can certainly enable the long-awaited relaxation and necessary deep sleep. When choosing the blanket weight, depending on the type of illness, the blanket weight should first be selected according to the weight chart. If the body weight is exactly between two weights or just barely in one weight category, the lighter version should be chosen. Especially with respiratory diseases or high blood pressure, less weight can have a better effect, as too much pressure can negatively affect the illness. In case of uncertainties, it is advisable to consult your general practitioner.

No matter which blanket weight you choose – after a few days, you will notice whether the blanket weight should feel a bit heavier or rather be perceived as a burden. If you want more pressure, you should initially increase the blanket weight by 2kg. If you find the blanket weight uncomfortable, try the blanket with 2kg less weight.
