What mothers wish for on Mother's Day: Sleep!

A recent study from the USA with 3,000 mothers found that each child increases the likelihood of sleep deprivation by 50 percent. Another study from Germany confirms that insufficient sleep is very often associated with the number of children in the household.

As many parents know, there is hardly any way to make up for lost sleep at night during the day. It is made more difficult by the fact that one can quickly get caught in a thought spiral if one cannot stop thinking about how little sleep one actually gets.

Even the good advice to sleep when the child sleeps usually doesn't help, as short naps are not necessarily a reliable option for mothers to catch up on sleep (or fathers, but here it is only about mothers).

Dealing with recurring sleep deprivation while managing household and daily life with a child can quickly become a challenge.

This situation is all too common. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an agency of the US Department of Health) estimates that 50-70 million adults in the USA, about 10-25 percent, suffer from chronic sleep disorders. According to the DAK Health Report, in Germany as well, one in ten suffers from severe sleep disorders, which are associated with difficulties falling and staying asleep, poor sleep quality, and exhaustion. Women are even more frequently affected than men.

This is not surprising. In our 24/7 culture with news around the clock, one can and will repeatedly be distracted from sleeping and find it difficult to focus on falling asleep.

One way to help mothers reclaim their night is a weighted blanket. These are designed to reduce stress and promote deeper REM cycles. Our therapy blankets are designed to weigh about 10% of the user's own body weight, making them a reliable option for all kinds of mothers to fight back their sleep despite the challenges they face.

Persistent sleep deprivation in mothers (and all other women, men, and children) can significantly affect daily life and also negatively impact health.

Physical health

Poor sleep can have a negative effect on our physical health. It is associated with increased calorie consumption, weight gain, weakened immune defense, and a higher incidence of chronic diseases such as stroke, heart disease, and Alzheimer's.

Cognitive performance

A lack of high-quality sleep at night has been linked to concentration and memory problems during the day. Sleep loss can even impair the process of developing new brain tissue.

Emotional well-being

After sleep deprivation, the emotional centers of our brain are 60 percent more reactive. Studies show that poor sleep is directly linked to anxiety, irritability, aggression, and depression.

Our conclusion: mothers go through a lot, more than we probably realized as children, and they always do it with love and in our best interest.

Mothers are (one reason) why we invented the therapy blankets. The blankets are a special aid for people suffering from insomnia. They simulate deep touch pressure, which is equivalent to a loving hug.

And for your information: mothers love hugs. But even more importantly, this feeling has been proven to promote the release of serotonin and melatonin, our sleep and happiness hormones.

The result is that you fall asleep faster and deeper and can enjoy life more.

We have a variety of suitable products alongside our therapy blankets such as weighted robes or weighted sleep masks, which all mothers will love and are the perfect gift for Mother's Day or any other day of the year.
