Caroline Helming
Occupational Therapist & Sleep Consultant

"I am a big fan of the concept. Whether privately or professionally, I can wholeheartedly recommend it."

How did you come across the therapy blanket concept?

I was already familiar with the concept from my work as an occupational therapist treating children with various diagnoses (developmental delay, ADHD, autism). “Heavier blankets” and “sandbags” are part of the basic equipment in every good occupational therapy practice. We occupational therapists mainly use them to promote deep perception.

I am now a sleep consultant for babies and toddlers and know how important it is for the little ones to feel secure and held. This way, they can let go and relax, and only relaxed children can sleep well. Since I had no experience with using therapy blankets in this area yet, but found the theory behind it absolutely convincing, I definitely wanted to try the blankets.

How do you find using a weighted blanket?

I actually bought the therapy blanket for my son. Although he sleeps well, he is always very restless motor-wise. However, I must admit that I actually use the blanket myself at every opportunity. It is, of course, not suited to my weight and size, but I am still enthusiastic and will definitely get one for myself as well. The feeling under the blanket is very pleasant – almost as if being hugged. A nice and calming feeling.

In which medical fields do you think the use of therapy blankets is sensible?

I clearly see the blankets being used for sleep and anxiety disorders of all ages (from about one year old). I believe they have a significant positive impact in these areas. Furthermore, I see them in the pediatric field for children who, for example, have difficulty sensing themselves or calming down.

Your conclusion from a personal or medical perspective

I am a big fan of the concept. Whether privately or professionally, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. A relaxed and secure sleep is a blessing for everyone. And who doesn't like to feel hugged and safe?
