Speech therapist

"As a speech therapist, I like to use it with children who come to therapy already agitated or restless. It is placed on the chair over their legs while working and can thus help them to concentrate better and engage with the situation."

How did you come across the concept of therapy blankets?

I became aware of the therapy blankets through the internet, as we are always looking for suitable, supportive materials for our health practice. The design and diverse range appealed to me greatly, and I really wanted to try the blanket. The website provides a good overview of the blankets available for children and adults. We opted for one of the children's blankets, as these are particularly suitable for our work. They come in wonderfully appealing designs. The cover is removable and washable, which is especially practical for our therapeutic routine. The reviews and experiences of other experts made us curious and convinced us to test the blanket ourselves. Delivery was quick and straightforward. So, we could start using it right away.

How do you personally feel about using a weighted blanket?

I have worked with weighted blankets before, but I haven't actually tried them myself in everyday life. With this therapy blanket, I took the opportunity to test it at home. I find that it has a very pleasant and calming effect. It gives you a feeling of security and helps you feel more grounded instantly. I particularly like to use the blanket on the sofa after a stressful day to unwind. But it also helps me fall asleep quickly. Many people can't imagine that it's pleasant to lie under "weight" until they've tried it themselves and realize how quickly it creates a calming, comforting feeling. I also like to put it on my lap when working on rainy days, and I feel like I can work better with it. My husband was also immediately enthusiastic about it and fell asleep faster.

In which medical fields do you believe therapy blankets are useful?

I find its use in everyday therapy very beneficial. I think more therapists should share their experiences working with the therapy blanket. I also believe that the use of therapy blankets in hospitals (especially for children) could be beneficial. After having to spend several days in the hospital with my young son myself, I can imagine that such a blanket would have provided security and comfort in that stressful situation, away from home. In psychological counseling, the blanket also makes a lot of sense for providing protection and support. Its use in working with stress and in burnout (prevention) also seems very sensible to me. Our times are so fast-paced and stressful that such a blanket can help people to feel themselves again and to focus more on sensation.

Where are therapy blankets already successfully being used?

We use the therapy blanket professionally in our interdisciplinary practice. It is used in occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychosocial counseling. As a speech therapist, I like to use it with children who come to therapy already anxious or restless, or who have difficulty perceiving their bodies well. It is placed over their legs on the chair during work and can thus help them to concentrate better and engage with the situation. I also like to use it when treating patients with voice or swallowing disorders on the therapy couch, to give them a comfortable, secure feeling. I can no longer imagine therapy without it. In psychological counseling, the blanket can become an important tool for grounding, feeling, or calming oneself in exciting situations. In occupational therapy, it is used for perception, or also carried or pulled through the room to stimulate deep sensibility. So, it is used daily in a variety of ways.
