October 10 - World Mental Health Day

Over the past years, especially on social media, the call for more self-love, self-acceptance, and self-respect has grown stronger and rightly so! According to the German Federal Office of Public Health, almost one in three people experiences a treatable mental illness during their lifetime. Depression, bipolar disorders, and alcohol-related illnesses make up an increasing share of these conditions. Mental illnesses are still often kept silent today because they continue to lead to stigma, misunderstanding, and exclusion – with serious consequences especially for those affected.

What is World Mental Health Day? 

In 1992, the World Federation for Mental Health and the World Health Organization declared October 10th as World Mental Health Day, which has been observed every year since. The goal of this day is to raise awareness about mental health. Every year, this day is used to draw attention to the topic of mental health through contributions, activities, and campaigns – worldwide!

History of World Mental Health Day

This day was established to educate the public about mental health and to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues. It was first held in 1992. And every year, the day is accompanied by a different theme.

In 2021, the theme was "Mental Health in an Unequal World." It focused on people with other long-term health conditions, single parents, and marginalized groups. All these groups have a higher risk of mental health problems. The WHO announced that the theme for 2022 is "Making Mental Health and Well-being for All a Global Priority." The declaration refers to various global issues that have worsened global mental health.

The importance of mental health awareness

World Mental Health Day is important because it raises awareness about mental illnesses, educates people, and helps them find support and assistance. Raising awareness about mental illnesses also helps those affected feel less alone. Most mental illnesses are inherently isolating. Improving openness and acceptance of these illnesses helps affected individuals feel less alone or ashamed.

Another important aspect of this day is the call to countries to provide more resources for mental health. This is especially important in low-income countries, as people there have little access to treatment.

Ways to celebrate World Mental Health Day
