Alternative Practitioner for Psychotherapy

"In cases of stress-related tension, increased irritability, or psychosomatic complaints, the intervention could have a supportive effect."

How did you come across the concept of weighted blankets?

I was asked if I would be interested in trying a weighted blanket. To be honest, I was skeptical at first – the idea of sleeping with a six-kilogram blanket seemed rather strange to me. At the same time, I am generally open to new approaches and curious about methods that can support well-being. Although I had heard of therapy blankets occasionally, I probably wouldn't have thought of getting one myself. I simply couldn't imagine that this extra weight could feel pleasant.

How do you personally feel about using a weighted blanket?

Upon unpacking, I was surprised by how significant the six-kilogram weight felt. My skepticism initially persisted – I still couldn't imagine sleeping soundly underneath it.

However, during a short nap, my impression changed significantly. The blanket feels soft and high-quality – and the weight distributes evenly over the body. Instead of feeling constricting, it conveys a sense of stability and security.

I perceive the gentle, even pressure as calming and supportive – not oppressive, but rather protective. This feeling positively surprised me and made me curious to experience more with the blanket.

In your opinion, does the use of therapy blankets make sense in sports? Where are you already successfully using therapy blankets? And where do you see further potential?

As a non-medical practitioner for psychotherapy, it's important for me to keep my statements within the scope of my professional competence. Weighted blankets are not a substitute for medical or psychotherapeutic treatment.

They seem useful to me as a complementary measure, especially for people suffering from difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep, or from inner restlessness and anxiety. The even, deep pressure can calm the autonomic nervous system and thus promote relaxation.

Their use could also be supportive in cases of stress-related tension, increased sensory sensitivity, or psychosomatic complaints. In practice, I can imagine recommending them as an supplementary measure – particularly when clients have difficulty finding a relaxed state.

Naturally, in cases of existing physical or severe mental illnesses, medical advice should be sought beforehand.

Your conclusion from a personal or medical perspective

For me personally, the weighted blanket has proven to be an enriching experience. I fall asleep faster and my sleep feels deeper overall. In the mornings, I feel more rested and internally balanced.

Furthermore, I notice that falling asleep is easier for me because my body finds a state of relaxation more quickly.

Even though it's not a cure-all, I find it to be a simple yet effective support for more calm, relaxation, and sleep quality.
